Skin color doesn’t matter. The self-actualization of transracial adoptees exists on a continuum, often evolving only when we feel safe. This explains why many Asian adoptees don’t identify as people of color until immersed in online community. It takes a lot to break through the brainwashing and barriers—even for those raised with racial support. Christina reached out to me through the Transracial Adoption Perspectives group on Facebook and asked to share her experience as a transracial adoptee. What was supposed to be a fifteen-ish minute video chat turned out to be an almost hour long conversation so we’ve agreed to break it up and post it in two parts. This is Part 2.

A difficult aspect of adoptee identity development for transracial adoptees is that they are expected to immediately fit into and accept their new White family.
